1 less known Gozo cave that is way better than Calypso cave

We’ve been living on Gozo for one year, but yet we had no idea that Tal-Mixta Cave exists. We knew about well known Calypso cave, and we went to visit it the first month on this beautiful island. That was a disappointment!

Here comes a big spoiler: there is no Calypso cave anymore. Well, it is to some extent, but it is collapsing, so it’s closed for public. We tried to find that famous rock shelter. There was a sigh with a name, but no cave. I was walking up and down and around, but there was only a fence, with a podium from which you could see the whole Ramla bay. Gorgeous view! But that wasn’t what I was searching. I went back to a truck where was some girl selling treats.

“Can you please tell me, where is Calypso cave?” I asked.

“It’s there,” she pointed in the direction from where I’ve just come.

“But, there isn't any cave. I couldn’t find it,” I already felt like an idiot. How can one not find a cave that is well marked?

“Well, you cannot go into the cave because it’s crumbling. It’s closed,” the girl kindly explained.

“What’s the point then, if you cannot see the cave, you just know that it is there somewhere?” The girl shrugged to my question. How could she know?

We went to enjoy orange sand of Ramla bay with a trace of dissatisfaction.

It was one year later when we were walking from Ramla coast towards the bus station when a group of ladies stopped us and asked if we went to Tal-Mixta Cave. “Where is that?” we asked. One pointed a finger to well visible cave on the other side of Ramla Bay, opposite to Calypso Cave. We noticed that cave before, but we thought it is too high up and not possible to get to it. The unknown woman assured us it is an excellent walk up. Of course, I needed to check it out as soon as possible.

Guess what? It is a fantastic walk up and even more astonishing view than from Calypso Cave.

Pathway to the cave

I suggest a walk during winter months. Everywhere are blossoming flowers. The grass is green, bushes blossom and bees are busily buzzing around. The smell of colorful meadow will accompany you all the way up. If it is windy down on the beach, the wind decreases when you are walking towards mystery cave that is looking down on you. Sun pleasantly warms your back; soon you’ll put down your softshell jacket. Just a short ascent towards the end of the pathway and you'll reach your destination. The cave will offer you a spectacular panorama of deep blue sea, green land, and sandy beach.

Rocky steps in the cave will lead you towards the light on the other side. You’ll realize that it is also possible to come to the cave with a car. But if you can walk, don’t neglect mentioned pathway from Ramla Bay. It is not long or hard stroll up. My four-year-old boy raced up without any difficulty. It will take you less than half an hour to hike up (including stops for taking photos) and only ten minutes to get back down. I am not implying that you should hurry. Not at all! Take your time and enjoy the nature that is so openly offering its beauty.

Yesterday we hopped on the train and took a trip to Bohinj lake. Our bikes had the pleasure to join us. Kids were super excited — they love to swim, and lakes are the best because the water is calm and sweet. But to get there, you need to sit on a train for two hours.
